April 2007

What can I say… I failed my first attempt at passing my Driving test to get my Full Licence, I suppose it was to be expected, I’m only 4 months on the road and I don’t drive everyday. I must admit I was pretty nervous and to add insult to injury it started to rain cats and dogs the minute I started to do the test. I’m going to re-apply for my test and fingers crossed 6 months time I’ll be flying it… At least I can still drive on the road :)

Just stay out of my way…. :D

upgraded word press…

Throwing Caution to the wind… I ventured to Kerry over the beautiful weekend. I went by myself, as i needed to “just” get away. I drove down on Saturday afternoon leaving at 12′ish and arriving about 4′ish, I took its quite easy stopping along the way, the odd pit stop and such :)

My “just in time approach” to finding accommodation works quite well for me. Upon arriving in Killarney I found the tourist office and promptly book a B&B, Killarney was chock-a-block with tourists, me included :) I stayed quite close to the centre of town, which was good as I didn’t have to spend that much time finding the B&B. With my previous excesses of the week I was feeling so tired that I crashed out in my room.

Sunday is when I started to drive around the ring of Kerry. For me, I thought that I would make it around in a few hours …. it took me basically the whole day to get around, I must say that having a car is great, even if you plan to stay for a week or so a normal bike would do just a good, if the weather held…Going here on my own was great as I didn’t have to have a committee meeting to pick a place to stop or when to have food etc.

I stayed over night (Sunday) in Kenmare and I must say considering the amount of tourist in the place what really quite a shite place to stay. Pretty crap music in all pubs.. I think if I do it sometime again I will take a detour to dingle..

Monday, I made the trip back via cork… That’s it really…

my little big adventure was over :(

I bought a book called “The last oil shock” It’s 250 pages of pure horror! I know that when someone writes a book, you have to take what they say with a pinch of salt… But for some reason what this guy is saying makes sense…. I’ve been getting weird dream because of reading this book. Should a fraction of the facts that he as stated come to pass, it will spell disaster for mostly everyone on this planet.. World recession, More wars, less food available.. And all this takes is for us to run out of cheap energy….

Oil is due to peak, that is 50% of the proven reserves are gone and production will start to fall.. at and average 3% per year.. as this happens the price of oil per barrel will rise from what it is now $70 to a predicted price of about $400 per barrel.. It’s not a matter of if this will happen but just how fast. On average 84.9 million barrels of oil are used per day and finding alternatives to this is a mind blowing effort.

The life of excess is over, produce arriving from all over the world will stop(it will be too expensive), Growing local will be the normal maybe even in your garden :) as funny as that sounds… Some people will says “Fuck it! let the party contine”. For me I think I will double my effort to try and use less energy… Consider MPG of a US car to European car.. 24.5mpg for a US car compaired to 40+ for a European… if the US double their MPG they would half their oil consumption…but this would only delay the oil peak and eventually no matter now fuel efficent US/European car get we are still using a finite resource…

I personally think that no one technology will replace oil for use as cheap energy. Hydrogen, biofuel, nuclear, wind, solar will all have their place… I do think its not about finding a replacement for oil but about living within this planets means for providing energy, For this to happen we have to do with less………….
